The challenge

GEFIT, a global builder of automated assembly systems for nearly six decades, set out to make industrial automation leaner and more flexible. Traditional approaches relied on dense sensor arrays, mechanical fixtures and precisely staged components, adding cost and limiting how quickly production lines could adapt. GEFIT needed a vision platform capable of perceiving parts and people dynamically in 3D space.

The solution

GEFIT integrated RealSense depth cameras into its proprietary AI-based vision platform, standardizing on the RealSense D555 for its PoE connectivity, field of view and high-density depth maps. RealSense depth data feeds the spatial awareness layer of GREG, GEFIT’s natural language robot programming assistant, giving robots real-time understanding of objects and people in the workspace.

The results

RealSense-powered perception eliminated blind picking, enabled real-time human detection for collaborative operations and cut application development from weeks to days. RealSense will expand across GEFIT’s AMR product lines as the visual foundation of its human-friendly automation systems.

Automation Without the Fixtures

By perceiving components dynamically in 3D space, GEFIT’s RealSense-powered vision platform eliminates the need for mechanical fixtures, complex positioning or elaborate staging areas, unlocking leaner system design and multi-model production on a single line.

Plain-Language Instructions, Precise Movement

GEFIT built GREG, an intelligent assistant that lets companies program robots in natural language. RealSense depth maps feed directly into GREG’s spatial awareness layer, forming the foundation for safe robot movement through shared human-robot environments.

Custom Applications, Delivered Quickly

Fast camera integration means fast delivery. When customers bring complex, non-standard requests, GEFIT delivers working vision applications in a fraction of the traditional development time, with bin-picking systems scoped and completed in days instead of weeks.

“What we really like about RealSense cameras is the flexibility and the possibility to integrate them into our system in a very short time. When customers ask about a special application, we can deliver results in hours, not days.”
